Sick and Tired of Being Sick

I recently blogged about how I've been sick a lot lately. Well, here I am again with a cough and cold that just won't quit. I think I take pretty good care of myself. I eat healthy, home made food, I take my vitamins (when I'm not too nauseous from morning sickness) and I drink plenty of water. So why am I always sick?

When I say I'm always sick I pretty much mean it. I have something attacking my immune system every two weeks. I have this cold now and two weeks ago I had a virus that was probably the flu. Two weeks before that I had a bacterial infection that gave me a sore throat and cough. Actually I've had the cough since September. It gets worse at times and then manageable but never actually goes away. Being sick this often is really wearing me thin.

I'm a teacher and it's cold and flu season so I keep hearing things like, "Well, it comes with the territory" or "You'll probably feel better in the Spring". Well ya know what. It doesn't come with the territory. I've been a teacher for several years and never before was I sick like this every two weeks and I don't think I'll feel better in the Spring because I was sick in September, before cold and flu season began. Also, I have asthma and seasonal allergies so when Spring rolls around and pollen is in the air, my asthma will be worse than it is now, when I'm sick.

I'm not worried about me. I'm worried about my baby. When I go to the doctor I'm handed a prescription. I've had seven medications prescribed to me already in the short time I've been pregnant. I'm always told, "It's better to take the meds and get well than to let the infection grow". Never does anyone try to figure out what is actually causing me to get sick and suggest that I do something about that. Nope. Just keep feeding my unborn child antibiotics. That's the American way.

What type of cough is it? Does it come on suddenly, creating a fairly violent coughing spell? You might want to ask your doctor to test you for pertussis (yes, whooping cough)...I caught it from a student in October 2005, the worst of it hitting in mid-November (flu-like symptoms, trouble breathing, etc.), and it didn't completely go away until June 2006...apparently it's not so uncommon these days for our age group to get it, since our immunity lessens with time.

Take care of yourself...I hope you start feeling better soon.

I feel so bad reading this. It is terrible to be sick when you are pregnant. You are right that they should be looking for the cause. I haven't taken antibiotics in about ten years.

My story feels so much like yours. Except I am not pregnant. I have had a cold for about 3 weeks now. First with the sore throat, now with a tickle cough. It does feel a lot like my fall ragweed allergy. My asthma as well feeling bad.

When I was pregnant, I had a few sessions of acupuncture to help clear up the pressure in my sinuses. It was very helpful. It's worth a try.
